An End to Bad Endings

Mamie Lee, Writer

Bad endings…Am I right? The one thing I despise in this twisted world is a bad ending to a tv show/movie. How is it right when you sit through an hour and a half movie and they  give you scraps for an ending? Or when for years you’ve been growing up with a show, sitting on your couch season after season, cliffhanger after cliffhanger, and they end the show with a dang HUG! and a good-bye. The disrespect I have felt time after time when the writers of the show don’t put  their heart and soul into the ending of a show or movie–the very part you look forward to the most in a movie/show–and then at the end they take all those AMAZING moments and wrap them up in less than 10 minutes.

I just recently finished Season 6 of Empire and when I tell you I was mad–oh boy, how angry was I when I saw that season finale?!? All season long they had been showing future moments of the main character getting killed, which was something so crazy! Because I wasn’t expecting it. But when it got to THE LAST DANG EPISODE!!! It didn’t even happen, it’s like they just poked me when a stick all season, just to stop with no explanation why they were doing it in the first place.

Now, not only do I hate bad endings but when the bad ending is a cliffhanger, OMG literally just pee on me and say it’s raining. How can you really leave a cliffhanger at the end of a show/movie and not plan on making another season or sequel. Like WHAT?!? That is crossing the line for me. I’m going to have to think for the rest of my life about what would’ve happened if the writers had continued  that scene. But now I’ll never know and that eats me from the inside and out. Long story short, don’t make bad endings. If you’re a writer for a show or movie, be prepared to blow your viewers away with the ending, and if you’re not planning to do that, then think of a different career path cause movie and show writing is NOT for you.
