Top Ten Hidden Gems of Netflix

Tori Wensloff and Brandon Hyatt

Wondering what to do with all of your free time? Wonder no longer… In no specific order, here are our Top Ten Hidden Gems of Netflix that anyone with a heart and a brain (that’s you) should watch:

  • New Girl- Do you ever wonder what happens when a girl moves in with 3 guys? After a bad break up, Jess, a middle school teacher, moves in with a group of guys who just happen to have space in their apartment. What starts out as an act of convenience results in  funny and supportive friendships.
  • Scandal- Olivia Pope(Kerry Washington) has started a crisis management firm to solve some of Washington’s biggest issues. In the process of taking on Washington’s elite, she finds love…then she doesn’t…then she does again.
  • Southside with you- This movie takes you on the first date of Barack Obama and Michelle. This movie gives you an inside look at a personal side of the first couple before they were the first couple. Very good. Very cute.
  • The Big Short- In 2008, the housing market crashed. Prior to this happening, a few people had research to prove that it was going to happen. The Big Short shows how unscrupulous people can use tragedy for their own profit. Steve Carell headlines this documentary style movie.
  • Southpaw- This is one of my favorite movies. Southpaw is an exciting movie about a professional MMA boxer who deals with personal struggles within his family. His fight isn’t just against another boxer, but against forces out of his control. It will leave you with tears in your eyes.
  • The Waterboy- Don’t let Adam Sandler derail you from watching this movie…Sandler is the football team’s waterboy, until his anger brings his amazing tackling skills out on the field.
  • 21- The smartest minds of MIT take on Las Vegas only to lose everything… twice.
  • Freaks and Geeks- Very funny TV show about a friend group going through high school being social outcasts. The cast includes young James Franco, do I need to say anymore? And with only one season, you’ve got nothing to lose.
  • The Carrie Diaries- This short 2-season prequel to Sex in the City is great if you want a fun comedy/romance set in the 80s. It features a girl navigating high school, love, and a brand new job in Manhattan. *Disclaimer: The last episode ends on a cliffhanger.
  • Keith- If you’re in the mood for a good cry, this cute (but sad) love story is for you. Keith is suffering from cancer when he find love. His ultimate struggle is whether or not to accept the love knowing he is sick.
